Back from 3 days up north, and I confirmed what I already believed; Get OUT (state) and ride! Because of the weather, Washburn Lakes Solitude Area in Land 'o Lakes State Forest (adjacent to Converse Campground) was the best ride of the week, and it was awesome! The system is very much like the CAMBA trails, but less use, so it's more overgrown in spots. I rode primarily on the north section, and really enjoyed the ride.(There is a lot of beaver damage on the south side, hard to get through.)
I will do up a complete report and post some pictures in the near future. Meanwhile, if you are looking for someplace new to ride this weekend, North on 169 past the big casino with the great buffet ;) to Garrison, north on MN 18 to MN 6, then north on Hwy 6 to about 2 miles north of Outing, then take a left at the State Forest Campground sign. The trailhead is on the right, just before the campground.
BTW, I spoke with one of the DNR foresters whom I met on the trail, and he was very encouraging about getting more mountain bikers to ride the these trails! I also know the manager with Trails in that area, and will be communicating with him today or tomorrow.
Get out of town and ride!
