 There will be a 12 hour Mountain Bike race at Levis/Trow Mounds on June 19, 2004. There will be a 3, 6, and 12 hour solo category, 6 and 12 duo, 4 person male, female, and open categories. There will also be a single speed category. Registration starts at 6:30am on June 19.
Camping is allowed right at the Levis/Trow Mound Trail head for $5/night (tents only). There will also be FREE BEER  after the race!
For more info and registration, you can visit WWW.1DDC.COM (http://www.1DDC.COM).
This is a great place to ride (one of the best in the Mid-West) and what more can you ask for. You will be able to ride/race for up to 12 hours (what an epic), then afterwards you can drink some cold beer for free and pass out under the stars with your comrads.
Hope to see ya there!

ooohhhh...this sounds fun...I'm gonna have to think nice and hard about this one. Too out of shape for the 12 hr, but 6 certainly seems doable to me in this moment...Anyone else in?

I thought about it but it is the same weekend as the Houghton event.
I am in no way in shape for a 12 hour race. expecially on the single, which I will probably take. Depending on if I can find anyone else interested in the Houghton race, I might end up going to the Levis event. Might do the 6 hour, but on the geared or the 3 or 6 on the single.
I'll keep you posted
James
This sounds really good. . . Hmm. . .
I had been planning on doing the Keewenaw Chain drive but we may not be going up there that weekend. If that is the case, maybe I could work this one in somehow. If I did the 6hr that'd give me a little taste of what the 12hrs of Mount Kato will be like, which I plan on doing for sure. Anyone else plan on doing that Aug. 7th?

Yeah, I think I'll be attempting the 12 hr at Katoland. Maybe....It was loads of fun last year.
Doesn't look like we are heading to the U.P. on this weekend so I am seriously thinking of doing this event. I would do the 6hr one. Anyone else still interested?

I'm still thinking about it. We'll have the house on the market by then and will need to be out for weekend showings. I'll do the 6 hour too. There's NO WAY I'm in shape enough for 12. Sh!t, 6 hours is gonna be hard enough!

James, whats the verdict? Going to the UP or staying close to home and going to Levis? I'm still tentatively going. It all depends on how Lisa is feeling about being a milk factory.
I haven't went so far as to register yet but I still think I may head over for it. I'll be seeing James at trailwork tonight and I'll see if he's thinking of it at all.

Well, I don't think I'll be heading over but in lieu of that I am planning to go for a long ride early sat. morning (tomorrow) at either Farm/Mammoth or Elk River. Would either of you guys like to join me at around 8:30 or 9am?

Hmm. Yeah that is sounding better that getting up to Levis for me. Lisa was really hesitant to go there. I could probably swing that. We've got a house showing at 11ish, so if I'm on the trail, it'll be a good thing. Where do you wanna meet?

Sounds good James.
Marty, c'mon up if you can.
Just in case we dont touch base before then, I'll be in the parking lot at SA at 9am and have a look for people.

None of us went to Levis. We went to Mammoth/the Farm instead. Probably had more more fun too. See our other post w/pictures.

Yeah, like Marty said we didn't do the Levis race (couldn't get away for the whole weekend) but we did hook up for a great ride at the farm and mammoth.
Here's the link post Marty mentioned. http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10939

My buddy and I made last minute plans and headed out to Levis/Trow for the 12 Hours. We had lots of fun and a great weather for an endurance race although the trails were bad. They added some boadwalks and logs over some areas but it was just too wet. I had never ridden there before, but after talking to some other racers they mentioned that the course was modified to eliminate the worst areas. The loop was about 9.5 miles long of which at least the first 3 miles were very muddy. I tried to follow trail conservation techniques by riding through the wet stuff but by the time the 6 and 3 hour riders hit the trail those sections were 5-7 feet wide, so I remember walking my bike on at least four different sections per lap. On top of that we had to endure the rest of the course with cleats, gears, chain and derrailours full of dirt.
In the other hand the atmosphere at the parking lot/timing area was great, they had music and videos of other endurance races. The Red Bull people came and dropped off free stuff. There were two water/food stations out on the field and there was always someone there to either hand you out some food or support you everytime you went by, and thankfully, access to a water hose so you could rise off the mud before the next lap.
Overall everyone was very friendly and supportive. I saw a couple cars (including a big RV) there with MN plates but I never got to talk to anyone. I guess most of them were too busy riding.
So, it was great experience being the first time I participated on a 12 hour event, I now look forward to the 24 Hours of Afton and the 12 Hours at Mt Kato.

Excellent! Thanks for the report Jeff. If I would have headed out I was going to do the 6hr as a little taste of endurance racing, as it would be my first long event. Unless I hit another one somewhere in wisconsin before then, the Mt. Kato event will be my first 12 hr and I'm looking forward to it!
