Well considering when most people think of cycling they think of mom and pop riding down the river road at 3 mph.....i can see how it would not rank....that and im sure the top 20 are all much more tv friendly and sponsered and so on...so yeah riding always gets a bad rap :(

Also note that it was rated by ESPN, keep in mind that ESPN doesn't get much money from cycling, it's not a "spectator" sport. Boxing and football are, and therefore will make ESPN money, and therefore are more "athletic" in nature.

These guys have apparently never seen the downhill free riders after they go under the RedBull arches. I don't know it's a toss up. I could ride my bike down a cragy hill, off a cliff, sail over twenty foot wide gorge that goes down about fifty feet or let a guy punch at me. Either way there is an ambulance waiting.

i just did an informal personal inventory of emergency room visits, stitches, broken bones and prescribed painkillers by sport.
cycling/mountain biking ranks at the top: stitches, various muscular and skelatal injuries and prescription painkillers are all well represented.
ice hockey is a close second, with just slightly fewer of all of the above.
volleyball is third, but might actually be tied for second since the one major injury it caused me required surgery (my right pinkie points fewer than three directions now).
fourth on the list is golf, but only because some kid hit me in the forehead with a 9-iron when i was in fourth grade, resulting in 15 stitches and a rather nasty concussion.
fifth is ultimate frisbee, a game in which i somehow managed to tear a rotator cuff. i should list kneeboarding as a contributing factor here, though.
so i have to reach two conclusions: first, cycling is in fact a tough sport. second, you can make anything into a tough sport if you do it with enough drive, reckless abandon and/or sheer stupidity.

Here are some of the sub-categories that were used to get to the final result/score:
ENDURANCE: The ability to continue to perform a skill or action for long periods of time. Example: Lance Armstrong - Cycling #1 in this category.
STRENGTH: The ability to produce force. Example: NFL linebackers.
POWER: The ability to produce strength in the shortest possible time. Example: Barry Bonds.
SPEED: The ability to move quickly. Example: Marion Jones, Maurice Green.
AGILITY: The ability to change direction quickly. Example: Derek Jeter, Mia Hamm.
FLEXIBILITY: The ability to stretch the joints across a large range of motion. Example: Gymnasts, divers.
NERVE: The ability to overcome fear. Example: High-board divers, race-car drivers, ski jumpers.
DURABILITY: The ability to withstand physical punishment over a long period of time. Example: NBA/NHL players.
HAND-EYE COORDINATION: The ability to react quickly to sensory perception. Example: A hitter reacting to a breaking pitch; a drag racer timing acceleration to the green light.
ANALYTIC APTITUDE: The ability to evaluate and react appropriately to strategic situations. Example: Joe Montana reading a defense; basketball point guard on a fast break.

Hrmmmm.....i think cycling wins em all cept maybe flexability in the gymnast way and the durability of getting beat up like an idiot.
