A 51-year-old bicyclist from Lake Elmo was killed Friday after losing control of his bike and colliding with a truck in southeastern Minnesota.

George Szymansky died shortly after 4 p.m. after he crashed into an oncoming truck on County Rd. 114 in Elba Township, about 25 miles east of Rochester.

Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand said Szymansky was riding with about 20 other bicyclists when the group steered downhill around a curve.

Szymansky lost control of his bike in the turn and crashed into another bicyclist before veering into the path of a grain truck. Szymansky died instantly, Brand said. The other cyclist was taken to a hospital, and the truck driver was not hurt.

Witnesses reported that the truck appeared to be within posted speed limits, Brand said. No citations were issued.

The bicyclists were camping in Whitewater State Park, near the accident site, as part of a training camp for the Loon State Cyclists bicycle club. Brand said it was the year's first traffic fatality in the county.

It's sad to see something like this, and the accident at the River Bottoms, happening so early in the season. Too bad it takes such awful events to remind everyone of what can happen when you ride.

It was Lake Elmo resident and Loon State Cyclists member George Szymansky who died last Friday. George was taking part in the Loon State Cyclists annual spring training camp. The accident occurred durring the Friday (4/2) ride.

While it's true George died while riding his road bike, what you may not realize is George, like many members of local "racing" clubs was a accomplished mtb racer. George probably raced more off-road races than road.

George was a presence at most mtb events. I, like many racers knew who he was and admired him. My only regret is that as a fellow LSC teammate, I didn't know him better.

To give you just one example; George, at age 50, finished this past years Chequamegon 40 at 195 out of 1488 males OVERALL. I challenge anybody, at any age, to go sub 200 at Chequamegon.
