I rode zinger today and it is good to go top to bottom. a portion of the trail that goes through a section of ferns is damp but doeable. All other parts are great.
Good to know. Thanks for the update. I like making early season trip to the Winona area.
Hey guys,
I'm workin on a trail near there that's location will remain un-named until it's completion. BUT, it is going to be sick. BIG drops, ladders, skinnies, and some where between a 8pack and 12 pack. total NS/FR/DH/DJ trail. Didn't get any work done over spring break b/c of snow:cryin: but when I get home from school I should be able to finish it up quick. Glad to hear that all the local trails are opening.

Anywho, if you need any help with construction let me know. there are a few of us that freeride down here. you want a mass of people to help you, email me at wsubike@hotmail.com that is the winona state bike club's email. Otherwise me and Preston (the guy that fell) would be at service

Ben,
Good to hear things are already good to ride down there. I think that is the earliest I can remember it being open in recent memory. I was thinking of playing some paintball this weekend but if that falls through I might just swing down and get a ride in.

Went hiking at Holzinger on a recon mission today..looks good! Only a couple of downed trees from the recent storms. I saw a few riders there. Hopefully will hit it this week.

Holy crap, Another winona rider on MORC. We need to meet up. I have been running all of upper loop and its pretty close. I think it is still moldable/tacky and some wet areas in the fern populated areas that need to dry up a bit. I saw a tree down on Wildwood today on run up wildwood and down Rock Quarry. Overall not too bad when not even a month ago we had 16 inches of snow on the ground and I was backcountry skiing the bluffs. I am still going to give it another week to really firm up. The rain that is forcasted for tonight and tomorrow will probably push that back even farther.

Are you getting much rain down in Winona?

We have been getting some off and on. Nothing really heavy but enough to slow down the drying process a bit.

I run up there everyday. I'll post on here once they are good to go again. It has been very windy lately down here which is really helping out.

Holzinger is in great shape and dry enough to ride. There are two trees down. One on the lower return portion of lower loop and One on wildwood climb. the trail does have a fair amount of leaves on some portions of the trail, but the wind is quickly blowing them off. If anybody wants to come down here and ride and would like a local to lead them around email me at bberndt@gmail.com.

I got your email and I"m not sure how the trails are going to be since the rain we got today. I"ll check out the trails tomorrow morning before church and I'll give you a call and let you know.

The trails are ridable but a little slick in a few areas. Horseshoe on the wildwood climb is in need of some rebuild after some washout has made it sketchy with the consequence being good 10-15 feet crash into a rocky creekbed. I DID have a fun crash today when I spun out on some slick rocks. I ended up doing a tumble down the side of the bluff, but my bike was okay so I was happy.
Dan and Beth, thanks for coming down and riding. Sorry it didn't go quiet as well as it could have. I hope you will come down agan this summer once we have fixed a few spots and piled a bunch of logs over the scary-as-hell non bike trail entrance so nobody gets lost. Hope you guys had a nice drive back up.

Ben - Thanks for being our "sherpa" and the good conversation. I hope you can get some MORC rides going down there.
We had a great time riding at Holzinger (except for the lost part; which actually ended up ok, although the missing wife kinda scared the sh:t out of me for a bit. I was amazed she actually was riding that section as well as she was too :) We'll definately get back there this summer for a longer ride on the parts we missed.
Anyone looking for an awesome trail to ride, head to Winona for the day. Nice not to steep climb to the top, and then some easy rolling singletrack until you head down. Unfortunately we didn't get to take the 'regular' biking trail down, so that's next time.
It's definately worth the trip.

Might just have to take a day to check out Holzinger....anyone have good directions to it?:D

We really need a trail review on here for this place with good directions.
Coming from the Twin Cities, take Hwy 61 down into winona. Take a right at the Huff Street Stoplight. Take another right and drive down the service road running along side Hwy 61 for about a mile. On your left, you will see three driveways leading up small hill to a log cabin lodge and a parking lot. This is the trial head and you will launch from this point. The trail system isn't marked so you kinda just have to know where to go. I recommend finding a local, like myself, to show you around.

After riding down there last weekend, I also recommend that you get a guide to show you the trails. Once you get up on top of the bluffs, there are a few spots that could really mess you up. Plus you'll probably miss alot of cool singletrack.

Uh!!! Those are the fun parts!!! Another fun thing to do is put on some goggles and armor, and follow any deer trails from top to bottom!!! I did it once down in holzinger it was a blast!!!

Serious reply: You have no idea what parts I'm talking about, because deer would die on this route i.e. over cliff... (You may be talking about the "Salad Bar" downhill run, which Ben pointed out to me and your name actually came up :)
Smart ass reply: I used to do that when I went to college in Winona, back in 1986. Except I wasn't on a bike, but I did have goggles on...
