It looks like the last date to pre-register is Monday, April 5th. It has been a few years since I've done this ride since it tends to overlap with my spring Moab trip. But that trip has been postponed until May 14th-16th. So I am thinking of riding this year. I am looking for some other skinny tired riders to pedal with. Reply here if interested.

I'll be riding this year with a couple friends. We haven't decided what time or where to meet yet, but it's always more fun to ride with a group! Once I know more, I'll let you know and you can see if it works with what you'd like to do.

It looks like pre-registration (http://www.ironmanbikeride.org/#stillopen) has been extended to April 12th...

Bright Yellow and I are commited to the century!

Let us know what time your planning on starting - it would be good to share the pulling with a larger group. Last year was way to windy!

It looks like we may have a cool and intermittently rainy day for the Ironman. At least that is what the long range forecast is calling for. But things can certainly change--and hopefully for the better.

We should start planning on when and where we are going to meet and exchange cell phone #'s so we can meet up. Since we may not have met before, it may be a bit tricky to find each other among 6000 or so bikers. Oh, I should be wearing some black bike shorts so that should help...
FYI, my name is Steven and my cell is 612.801.8975.

I am interested. Post it when you figure out where and when everyone is going to meet up.

Also, about what speed are you planing to ride?

Let me talk with Don, but we were thinking of getting there around 6:30 and getting rolling by 7:00. We also may have another rider to share the pulling:D
I know that is early, but with 100 miles to go we need an get after it.
Pace? Definately moderate.

7 sounds like a good start time. I'm meeting some people there. Was thinking about meeting by the Erik's display inside. That's about the only display that I can remember being there year after year.
We're planning on the century, maybe around 18 or so for an average?? I dunno...

By "around 18", I don't suppose you mean like 17, do ya? :)

We can meet you at the Eriks table at 7:00 no prob, then see how we all feel. It'd be great to ride with a group, the last few years, it's just been a couple of us. Get 5 people and that's only 20 miles of pulling each!

That's good to hear... I haven't been further than 35. We're going to try and get 33 in tonight and bust out some hills on Hwy 13. It should give us a good idea of where we are sitting...

Looks like starting earlier may be better. Not surprisingly, the wind is forecast to build during the day to a max average of 17mph at around 4pm. The direction looks SW switching to West. I would be up for meeting at 6:30 so we can actually be on the road by 7a.

How's the Erik's booth inside for a meeting place?
Anyone know if we have to go through orientation - if so, we should meet outside somewhere and all go through the orientation together - that way I can nap through it and get details from everyone else! :)

Adam - no orientation again this year which is nice.

Sounds like we are set. Go through registration first and then lets all meet at the Erik's booth inside at 7:00 and roll from there.

If the wind kicks up we can put Adam on the front :D

BTW - if it is raining - don't wait for me, I will likely be sleeping

Same here, if it's raining, the only place you're going to find me is in bed. And the way the weather is looking, that might just be the case.

Windy. Rain showers in the morning then becoming windy with mainly overcast skies in the afternoon. High 58F. Winds WNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of rain 50%.

What we need is to get a ride up to Taylor's Falls or Osceola and bike back down to Stillwater or home... mid afternoon of course, after the rain stops and the wind kicks in from the north...

I'm still planing on going. A few years back when it snowed I backed out and felt guilty all year. I have rain gear might as well use it. I sure hope I don't have to use it though.

Looks like it will be one of those years.... But I will still be there at 7a. I may not do the whole 100, it depends on the weather. I am a windsurfer so if it looks good for that I may cut out at 62.

How did everyone come out with the ride? Sunday was a prime example of why they call it the Ironman - 40's, rain, and wind. What a nice day for a 100 mile road ride. :cheesy:

Not too bad. Luckily we met Paul and had a third person to ride with. A couple people wussed out *ahem* and did the 62. The toughest part was at the beginning and the end. The beginning my fingers and toes were cold for the first 10 miles or so, and then at the end the headwind was awful. Not to mention the fact that we hit 100 on our computer but there was no school to be seen!
I had a great time and after I got home, I fell asleep on a full stomach of Pappa Murphy's stuffed crust Chicago style, watching F1. :) It was a good night.

I did the 100, but my computer said 108. I figured I set it up wrong. What mileage did your guys computer end up with?

I think we were about the same - 110. Got in around 3:30. I actually got some sun on my neck!

BrightYellow

Yeah, yeah... we wussed. We waffled, then wussed, if it is any consolation...

Hearing that it was actually 108 makes makes me even more sure we did the right thing. Hopefully you got our message in time... doesn't sound like you waited long... At least I hope not.

On Friday when I saw the prediction for rain on sunday, I wimped out and did a solo century to Stillwater, Osceola, etc in the wind on Saturday. Funny how getting old makes it harder to ride in the rain, particularly when my rain gear is was in my bicycle shipping crate in Arizona.

Yes - We suck :etard: . The forecast for all morning rain resulted in me sleeping until about 7:00-7:30 and then not deciding to ride until around 8:00 or so. The ground was dry and Scott took a look at radar and declared the rain to be done. Based on this crack prediction he is now looking for a job with a local news station forecasting weather full time :p

The only good news is that I was testing that new park tool bottle opener on Shiner bocks by 3:00 pm

Next year...................

Sorry I missed meeting up with you guys. I was just a little late. I saw your message on the board as I left at 7:15. I had forgotten my helmet and had to buy one.

It was a cold and wet start but I ended up riding with some real strong riders. One guy was amazingly strong (rides 3-4 century's a year) and would always pass me on the hills--even if I was pulling. But he was also a diabetic and after about 50 miles, he had to drop way down in speed and ended up meeting with a few medics to figure out what was up. They urged me to ride on without them so I rode the last 50 or so miles solo. I really liked having the tailwind for so much of the ride and I think the new route is better. But that last 15 miles in the wind and threatening rain was a struggle. Especially after the odometer creeped slowly past 100 miles to 108. I thought it was my odometer's problem until the woman who checked me in said that a lot of people had higher than 100 miles.

After starting pedaling about 7:30, I finished at 3:15 for a moving average of 17mph. Not too many cars left as I pulled out so I figure most people ride faster.

Back in town it was so sunny and windy I convinced myself to go windsurfing at Lake Calhoun for a bit. Boy was I hungry and tired after that. But the burger, beer and fries at the Uptown bar really hit the spot.

My son-in-law John and I did the 30. His first distance ride, and he did a lot better than me. He and his Trek Antelope (Old 830) just kept on slogging. I had some trouble in the hills on the first 10 miles, then it started to rain. Mt ski injured knee started to scream at me. I switched from my bike patrol jacket to my Gore-tex ski patrol jacket and was doing better until I blew a spoke at the 12-mile mark. SAG carried me and the bike (John kept on going) to Parkview rest top, and Erik's took off the freewheel and fixed my bike right (and free!) John met up with me and after some snacks and a rest, off we went for the rest of the ride. It got warmer, and windier, as we went on, but we made it! :crazy2: Wind was not quite as bad as last year with my middle daughter, but was still a factor.

Then I went to work today and dug waterline trenches in the campground. Now I am tired!

Ride safe,

No we didn't wait too long. After we met Paul, and I didn't see any sign of you guys, I figured it was due to the weather. Although, it would have been fun to fling worms off my rear wheel at more people!
I saw your message when we got back and laughed. Then I kind of thought, huh, 62 wouldn't have felt like this, that's for sure!

What a ride. The last 15 was a killer. I was thinking of going out for a ride tonight but will probably end up just cleaning worm guts off my bike. Gotta love riding in the rain!

I did the 62 this year. Rain the first 20 miles, wind the last 15 miles. I felt good most of the ride, except around 20 miles. Stopped, and tested my blood sugar, and it was low. Ate a granola bar on the side of the road, and then went back to it. Much better, mentally and physically. I am diabetic. Started at 8. finished at 2 I think, or was it 3... Next year, I will get to ride in on my new specialized Sirrus Elite, so that should be easier than my Specialized Rock Hopper FSR.

Congrats on the completion with the FSR!! wow. You'll be done in no time next year. Those Sirius bikes are sweet.
