I did some fantastic mountain biking in Guatemala and wanted to offer information about it for anyone interested. I did 2 tours, one that was for expert/advanced riders that was 90% singletrack with tough climbs and raging difficult mountain descents. The terrain varies from dry and rocky to jungle-covered slippery sections. Another tour was for intermediate ability level and was mostly downhill on steep rocky doubletrack with great views and trails by coffee planatations and villages. Guatemala is extremely economical at $5/night lodging and $5/day great meals. I'd encourage anyone to go, especially if you are looking for adventure! Feel free to let me know if you want more information.
Cheers,
Jennifer

Thanks for the info. I'm always looking for places to ride. Is the riding something that can be done on a hardtail or do you NEED to have a dual suspension?

I used a hardtail. Full-suspension would be nice, but the hardtail was fine. I rented a Specialized Hard Rock bike (which included water bottle, helmet and gloves) from an outfitter in Antigua. They have hardtail and rigid bikes. I'm not sure they had full-suspension available, but you may be able to find it elsewhere. Also, they only had platform pedals. You might want to consider bringing your own if you want to go clipless.
