Is anyone going on the MS150 (http://www.ms150.com/) this year? Some of my friends and I are planning on going. Most are not serious bike riders, just going for the trip/fun. I thought maybe we could start a MORC team and all go.. Anyone up for it?

I'm planning on going (it'll be a first time) assuming I can find a saddle that doesn't kill my 300lb butt:) I might even drag one or two of my coworkers with.

PWAXON is going as far as I know as well. Paul, wanna chime in?

I looked at the website. I hadn't realized they were raising that much money. 1.35 million last year!! Wow!

I wouldn't mind hitting this up. I would fall into the 'less serious' rider category but this sounds like a fun ride!
Hopefully I can talk my gf into it too!

We will need to decide on a captain (the one who gets to do all the paperwork), decide on a name and see if MORC will let us use a banner or something for advertising at camp.

Great, glad to hear that a few want to go. It will also be my first time, I've wanted to go for years now but havn't had anyone to go with. It looks like this year is a go for sure. :) Well, we should get the ball rolling on this to start training. I think the captin should be someone who's gone before. I'm sure we can get at least 4 ppl here to go, I hope. Chim in so we know your interested for those who havn't. I think it would be nice to get this in other places to get it out...maybe the homepage..?? Well now I'm getting pumped, can't wait! Let's get this goin.

Humm....no one seems to be to enthusiastic about this.. Well, I think we have enough here, maybe..?? I'll also get a few friends to join who are avid MTBers. Ok, if anyone does not want to be the captin I can do it. I just thought someone who's done this before should do it. I just need to know for sure that this is a go for those of you who want to go. I've also PM'd John Lundell to see if we can get a posting on the homepage but I havn't recieved a response yet. Again, let me know if this would be something you could do. Thanks!

How's that work, we each bring our own tent or something?

PWAXON
04-02-2004, 11:30 AM
Each person can bring 2 bags. I use a huge duffle and put everything in it. As it gets closer we can figure out how many tents we need. I usually share mine that way there is less to take down in the morning. I suggest bringing the following:

Your bike: pad it with pipe insulation if you care about its paint job. I helped pack the truck before and there is just no good way of doing it. Also a bag for the seat so it doesn’t get wet if it rains over night.

Cycling clothes, including rain gear if you have it.

Tent, sleeping bag w/pad the ground can be rocky in Duluth.

Clothes, plan for any weather it can be cold up there.

Tylenol and sunscreen

I bring a lawn chair, beats sitting on the ground.

Friday night you are on your own for dinner but after that all meals are provided.

Panman

I also have tent which can sleep 4 comfortly. I think MORC is good as well, that way we represent this group.

Same here, I signed up and entered that I would be joining an existing team and entered that team code. But now when I look at my account info, there is no reference at all to the effect that I am part of a team.

Where do you see a team roster paul? I don't even see where I could look at teams and rosters.

All right, that sounds good. I'll still work on getting them to joining MORC.

Another question, how does the paper pledge thing work? I'm going to try to get most ppl to pledge for me online but a few will just write a check. So, what are the steps for this? Ex: Do I..

Have them write out a check for me or MS150?
I know to write a receipt, deposit, and enter it into my pledge sheet.
But then were should I go with the money? Wait until the event and turn it in during sign in? Or is there somewere to mail it or register it online?

I've looked through a little of the MS150 web site but havn't had time to look into the newsletter and stuff yet. Thanks

Have people make check to the MS Society.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p> </o:p>

There are pledge sheets you can download online. They also have receipt slips you can give people but I have only been asked for one once.

<o:p> </o:p>

Try to collect all the money before the ride and turn it in the day of at the check in booth. If you don’t have all the money collected by the ride date they will send you a statement later asking for the remainder from the pledge amount you turn in on the day of the ride.

So it sounds like my wife and I are going to try to get hotel reservations. She doesn't have any interest in riding, but would like to be with me in duluth and hinckley and wants to stay in a motel or something. So, assuming I can still get reservations, I'll prob be going that route. If that's the case, maybe we'll just drive up to duluth with the bike on the car. Less hassle I guess. I guess the only caveat is that we'll have to figure out how to meet up in duluth, I'm assuming there will be a boatload of people.

Also, Paul and I are starting a Thursday ride so it would be great if other MS150 riders could join. We'll start at 6ish (PM) in various places, both MTBing and road. Let us know if you can join!

Well, it looks like I'm going to be camping. The hotels are just bilking people for rooms, which I guess I expect demand is high. My wife and kid will be camping with, even though they aren't riding. So we'll use my tent. But, since she is going to be there if you have stuff you don't want to transport in the trucks or can't fit it all in your two bag limit we can prob carry some extra stuff in our car. It works out nice this way because I'm going to transport my own bike up to duluth as well on the bike rack and not put it in the trucks.

She'll kill me for putting this out, but she is just learning how to ride a bike. She started a little last year, but the injuries she sustained learning really slowed things down (broken finger and badly injured knee). She really doesn't have any interest in riding that kind of distance anyway. We might take on part of the trail some other time though.

This event sure snuck up fast! It was not to long ago that I signed up.. My wife, kid and I are prob going to fill up our tent. It's a good sized tent so we could prob stash a few things that we don't want sitting out. Prob not room for the bikes though, just lock them together I suppose to make it hard to walk off with them. Otherwise we're just going to keep it basic. Tent, sleeping bags and the airbed and pillows and some personal effects. Sounds like they have shower trucks in hinckley for us sat night. I'll prob bring some snacks and sport drinks too. I don't know if I'll run into her along the trail. Prob just be at the start and end of days ride, but I can fill the camelbak and jersey with things to keep me going. Plus there are rest stops where I'm sure they got goodies.

My biggest apprehension is still the seat. I've got the most comfortable seat I've been able to find so far but it still gets me hurting after 10-15 miles - and we've got to do 10 times that  Hopefully I'll just go numb in the sitbones and not feel a thing. There's just no getting around the fact that I'm big and fat and it's torture on the butt. We've got long enough though, should be able to take breakes are releive the posterior.

The bike rack is kinda goofy. It's one of those yakima racks with the two arms coming off the back. You have to have a straight top tube and it does need to be a pretty big bike it seems. I have a 21 inch specialized hardrock and it fits perfect. Needless to say my kids bmx bike doesn't fit

Hmmm, that's a good point. For me to get up by you guys it's about a two hour drive in the traffic that time of day... My inlaws live in blaine and that's ususally about what it takes if we try to go up in rush hour. I just don't think I'm going to have that kind of time, I'd have to take off work early which isn't going to happen this week with taking friday off too...

Hey any of you guys have a floor pump that measures pressure that will handle presta valves? If so are you planning on bringing it? I could even haul it in my car if ya like. I've recently gotten presta valves and the only pump I have is my little portable pump that goes in my camelbak. So I never know how much pressure I'm running:crazy:

That's when I'm supposed to be at the party. I'd be willing to go south a bit but it'll have to be a little ealier.

Also, I have a small pump that fits both valves AND has a guage! Just a portable pump though, not floor.

Ya, so I forgot about this department party we have on Thursday after work... I'm gonna realy have to work around this schedule. Is there any way you guys can go for a ride earlier than 6? That's when I'm supposed to be at the party. I'd be willing to go south a bit but it'll have to be a little ealier.

Also, I have a small pump that fits both valves AND has a guage! Just a portable pump though, not floor.
Prob won't work for me. I really can't get out before 5, and prob shouldn't leave work before 6 really. Prolly plan to meet you guys at checkin on fri.

Were you planning on bringing that pump? If so, I'd appreciate it if I could use it to get my tires aired up properly.

Thanks
jas

I will have the pump with me. You can sure use it.

Paul, will starting around 7 work for you Thursday? Maybe Elm Creek or someplace between you and I. I'll have to drive from Maple Lake all the way back here that day.

So what is everyone brining? Tent, should I bring mine or does someone have enough room? I'll plan on having the trucks haul my bike. Food, what should I bring? Anything else?? lol, my first time. :D

We can meet at Elm Creek Thursday. 7 is fine. You will have to let me know where, I don't know the area well.

My friend has a big enough tent for the 3 of us so just bring your sleeping bag and pad. You can have 2 bags of any size so bring as much as you want. I recomend a folding chair and don't forget a towel so you can shower in Hinckley. Food is provided with the exception of Friday night (Pizza Luce) and for everything else there's MasterCard!

I'm bringing my tent and stuff, but it'll be full with my family. As far as food, I'm only bringing some energy bars and some poweraid, otherwise I'll rely on the rest stops.

Ummm, yea some chairs, towels, prolly some "street" clothes for times when I venture away from the festivities (not planning on it, but you never know). Lots of motrin, I'm sure I'll need lots of motrin. Will prob want something stronger, but I need to be able to ride :crazy2: Otherwise I don't plan on much. I sincerely hope to make it to the end of each days riding by the 5:00 deadline. And then I'll prob eat and drop:crazy:

So, I don't know about you guys, but I'd like to get early starts in the morning. Sounds like they start serving b-fast at 6AM or something and you can start riding at 6:30, I'd like to be as close to that as possible.

I think registration starts at 2. I have a lot of running but I'm going to get there as close to that as I can. I'm not sure how long it'll take to get registered, but I'd like to get going as soon as we can.

I am planing on taking off work at 2 Friday so the earliest I could get there is around 3. If you want to take off earlyer that is fine (Save us a good flat spot to camp in Duluth) Remember when picking a spot the band plays pretty late so not too close to the building. We will call you when we get up there.

A game or 2 sounds fun.

I wouldn't bother with anything more than a muilti tool. Different bike shops have guys setup with tents and tools ready to fix any problems you might have at all the stops.

Having a rain coat in duluth and at camp will probably be all that you need. As long as the temp is around 70 if you get wet, you get wet!

Bring a small bag for your seat so at least your arse will start out dry.

Well, my "grand plan" didn't have me leaving before 3 really. I figured that if I got there a bit after two, I'd be waiting in line and such and that would prob take till three. So if I'm ready to leave and we have found each other yet, I'll give you a shout on your cell and find out where we stand. Play it by ear from there.

If anyone wants to participate in the River Road Run this year, go here:

Next year I want to do the MS150, so I will keep an eye out for the posts and join the team next year :)

Thanks again for raising this money. I can tell you that it really means a lot to people that have MS, and their families.

Hey Josh, congrats on raising that much money, that's some serious dough!!!

I've got a real hard time raising $$, I'm surprised I raised as much as I did, at least I did better than my goal (which was to be allowed to ride:)) I'm just not the sales type. Even though I have "reason" to be concerned as the pastor that married my wife and I has MS, I HATE asking people for money.

Maybe, we'll catch ya next year, maybe I'll ride the river road run sometime too:) 600 miles would be a daunting task on a sport bike, my wrists ache thinking about it and I've got a comfortable "old" one:)

I ended up catching a ride through the last couple of stops, I just couldn't turn the pedals anymore. Surprisingly enough, I wasn't pooped out, but my feet couldn't take any more pain. I still beat the average:crazy2: I was hearing a worker talk at one of the stops and they were saying that they had lost half of the riders from the first day by the 2nd rest stop on the 2nd day. I'd believe it. After lunch, the trail seemed pretty empty.

I figure'd that even if I did try to ride the whole way, they would have made me take a support van for the last leg because of time. So there's no way I would have ridden the whole way.

looking forward to next year though.

So the friday night, I no sooner got the tent up and it started pouring. We quickly unloaded everything from the car (my wife and kid camped with us at the stops, which equals a station wagon full of crap) and went to dinner. The wind blew so hard that it blew open a zipper for a window and everything was under water in the tent. So we slept on wet pillows and wet sleeping bags

The next night it rained again, but not hard. During the day, we had beautiful weather, it was just about perfect. Although, even though I covered myself with SPF45 sunscreen, my shouders and arms burned so bad that they are blistered over:shocked:

Yes it was a good dinner, I did stop in.

I was amazed how many people didn't even ride the 2nd day. It is a daunting task to get you butt back on that saddle, but once you get moving you loosen up. The support vans were chock full leaving the campground in hinckley taking people back to lake elmo. I noticed after lunch in north branch the same thing. Lots of people there waiting for room on support vans but not a lot continuing on past that. The sun was a major factor in my not being able to continue the last bit. I still can't wear a shirt with sleeves, the skin is just falling off me and my arms and shoulders are covered with oozing sores from the sunburn. I should have been putting sunscreen on at each rest stop but I didn't:mad: On that second day, it wasn't so much about fatigue that finally stopped me, but pain. My feet hurt and the sun was just making the sunburn I had scream, I just couldn't take it anymore. When I got in the support van I started think, maybe I have enough energy to finish.
