Anyone know what the status is on the metro paved trails? Such as Elm Creek and Rebecca in particular. I can't wait to get out and try my new bike! I know the MTB trails are still way to wet. What's your guess on those trails? I just need to get out! Ahhhhh........ lol. :D

My first post as well. I'm looking forward to getting involved in MORC. I just found out about it this winter. We should get the word out about this more, I'll do what I can. Well, see you all on the trial!

The paved trails in the parks you mention are not plowed during the winter. So, it's a matter of waiting for them to thaw out. There's still snow and ice in the wooded sections, but they should being clearing rapidly with the warm temps.

The paved trail that runs along shepherd road on the North side of the mississippi is plowed, and thus, is clear right now. You could try that one out.

Today's 50 degree temps and strong south wind should do some real damage to any snow left on paved and crushed limestone trails. If the weather holds as predicted, most of the trails around town should be open by Monday for sure. Bunker Hills Park in Andover the paved trail looked pretty good this week, but then it snowed yesterday. Should be gone by now, though. I will be checking the LRTs and Luce Line later today. Como is open, and the bike trails along the east and west sides of the Mississippi in Mpls. and St. Paul are all good. Check out Calhoun and the lakes area in Mpls. But for now, STAY OFF THE DIRT! MTB trails are not ready to be used yet!

Ride safe,
Hans

I was on the LRT trail that runs from the midtown greenway out to Eden Prairie this morning. The crushed limestone portion that starts in Hopkins was kinda wet, so my bike and I got peppered in light tan mud droplets, but it didn't look like I was leaving any tracks (unlike the many other thin road bike tracks I saw there.)

I'll report back on the condition of that same stretch when I take it home this afternoon. :)

Where do you enter and exit this trail? I also take this trail in to work in Minnetonka. I work off Baker Road about a quarter mile from where the trail intersects. I start in SLP north of the trail junction at Excelsior Blvd in Hopkins. Maybe I'll see you out there some morning?

Tomorrow evening I don't have college and it will be fairly nice. So, I was thinking of either biking a local paved trail or hike Hillside. Of course I would stay off the trail, at least the wet parts but I just wanted to get out as well as check out the condition. Any thoughts? Yea / Nay? I could report back and let everyone know what it looks like. Or else I'll just hit up some paved trails.

It would probably be fun to hike around in there anyway. :)

It looks like they are starting trailwork on April 18th though.

Somewhere by the Hopkins water tower is where it turns into crushed limestone, then I follow it out to Baker road just like you, only then I've got 6 miles or so south before I hit work! Meh ... Friday that meant the last 6 miles were head-on into 35mph gusts. I know I also pass right by the SLP water tower.

So, yeah, man, we'll have to try to hook up some morning when I'm cyclo-commuting =). Might give me more incentive to do so, too. I drove today 'cause I've gotta be back for a 6 p.m. dental appt, but if I'm not in too much pain from having my wisdom teeth pulled I might be back out tomorrow :hit: .

John,

You take the trail that basically follows Mtka Blvd, right? The same one you and I did those intervals on years ago, yes? If so, I'm not on that one for commuting :). I take the one that goes in more of a SW direction. Looks like both trails end up on Baker road, but I end up at that one several miles south of the other trail's Baker road intersection. This makes sense, too, because you say you work in Minnetonka whereas I work right by Eden Prairie Center Mall...

No - I take the same trail as you. I work at Baker Road just north of Hiway 62 - right on the Eden Prairie / Minnetonka border. The whole trip for me is only 6 miles so sometimes I do a little extra to add some miles.

Cool! Well, then we'll have to try to coordinate it to ride together mornings and afternoons when I commute. If I go tomorrow, I'm going to try to leave my house by 7 a.m., hopefully getting to work no later than 8:30. we could meet up at the intersection by the SLP water tower around 7:15 if that'd work.

I'm not sure if I'm riding tomorrow. I have a lingering cold that I can't shake so I have been taking it easy. Definitely by the end of the week I will be riding in to work.

Yeah, and it'll also be raining, dumbass!

Actually, come to think of it, since I'm getting 4 of my teeth yanked out of my head 3 hours from now, I'm not sure how up to an early morning ride I'll be tomorrow, either ...

Anybody know what's happening in Resevoir Woods in Roseville (near Roselawn Cemetary). I cut through there on a road/paved path ride earlier today and saw quite a few of the hiking trails blocked off w. caution tape "trail closed, open trench" etc? The signs are just up from the parking area near the dirt access road to the old resevoir itself. Anyone have a clue what's up back there? Bad thaw?

I'll admit, I was a wimp and didn't want to put the bike rack on the car and drive all the way in to BC so I hit the road and did about 15 miles.
