I need some advice. I running in Grandma's Marathon, so I'll be in Duluth for a couple of days. I'm wondering where is the best place to cram in a good ride?
Also, is there any trails on the way up there (Hwy 35)?

Let me know, and THANKS!

Hartley near UMD and Spirit Mountain are probably your best bets.

I have to come clean; I'm only doing the half marathon. The reason why I run is to increase my riding endurance. Last year I ran Twin Cities Marathon (first marathon... first race, never even ran a 5K). That was a mistake because it took away too much time from the bike. Anyway, this year I got talked into doing Grandma's Half Marathon, and I refuse to take it very serious. I'm putting major miles on the bike this year. I want to chase deer around, not dodge traffic. On the other hand I'd rather dodge traffic than run another single mile on my treadmill. There just isn't enough good stuff to watch on TV to keep me running on that mind numbing machine.

Running sucks :hit: but it has made me a better moutain bike rider. The older I get the more help I need. Maybe there is some technology out there I could invest in to make me ride better? Running really sucks, but then again, if I don't do it for a couple of days I crave a good run. Very weird!:crazy2:

Mike,
Check out the Trails Directory and Trail Conditions sections of this-here website. There are lots of opportunities listed on the site, which you can access from the home page. Also you will find trail information in Steve Johnson's Mountain Biking Minnesota and Cindy Storm, Cindy Bijold, Kelly Owen and Anne Breckenridge's North Country Guide to Mountain Biking.

Hopefully, Northern MN IMBA Rep, Arrowhead Mountain Bike Patroller, MORC Chapter honcho and Northland biking guru Kurt Lange will see your post and respond directly. Nobody knows that area better than Kurt.

Ride and run safe,
Hans

Hi all,

I just moved up to Duluth from Minneapolis a couple weeks ago. Was wondering if there are any trails up on top of the hill at the western end of Skyline Parkway. It seems like with such a big expanse of undeveloped land that there must be some trails in there.

depends on where/what you're talking about...

on then spirit mtn property, there's a singletrack trail starting on the right side/top [as you're looking up] that wanders around the ski runs. it's used for the coggs race. we also ride the trail made by the trials motos during their event.

you should go on the ski hut (www.theskihut.com) monday rides. they ride all the best trails in dulluth.

Kurt,

Thank you for the response! I will have to check out the trail over by Spirit Mtn. The other area I'm wondering about is to the South/West of Haines Road just after it crosses Skyline Parkway (going up from West Duluth towards the Mall area). It looks like there might be a snowmobile trail or something there but it also looks ripe for biking. I'd love to go on one of those rides you mentioned from the Skihut. What time to they typically leave? Can't go this week because I ran Grandma's on Saturday and my legs are not happy.

Keep in touch,

Gary

that are is called the "powerlines". there is some trails in there that are usually wet but are rideable. some singletrack but mainly a snowmobile-type trail.

skihut rides leave the east store or a "trailhead" at 6pm. call and ask for mick.
