Are there any individuals out there interested in getting involved and becoming members of (a) patrol in 2004?
Just looking for general interest levels at this point...

Hopefully one of the patrol leads will jump in here, but in general there is a medical requirement and a patrol requirement, then a period of probation to get in.
Once you are in there are races, trails, events and all sorts of opportunities to help others and wear those gorgeous yellow jerseys :cheesy: I know at least a couple dozen of you that would make great patrol members...
I'm just fishin' for people right now... more info is definitely going to follow in the coming weeks, so I'm hoping to get a general idea of interest.

Basically, we will be setting down the requirements for the MORC patrol late this month. For the most part they will be along the lines of the National Mountain Bike Patrol, which requires a weekend-long training that includes:
- first aid/emergency care*
- communication equipment skills
- interpersonal skills
- interagency relations
- trail/environmental issues and impact
- orienteering
- riding skills
- emergency bike repair
*The exact level of first aid training will be determined then too, but if you want to patrol in the 3RPD, you have to have 16 hours of first aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Backcountry Patrol (Chippewa N.F.) requires 16 hours of Wilderness First Aid and 1 person CPR. (What Gopherhockey has already.) NMBP requires basic first aid and 1 person CPR.
Each patrol then sets a probation and participation requirement based on their needs and the area(s) they serve. Backcountry Patrol requires 8 hours per month, and active participation in both MTB and ski patrol during the first year. There are patrols in Brainerd, Duluth, Deer River/Zimmerman, and Hayward and Madison/Milwaukee WI, as well as here in the Twin Cites for those who might be interested. We all work together and help each other out, and have a lot of fun doing so.
There will be a posting here for meetings of both the MORC and Backcountry patrols, and the Backcountry annual training is already listed on the NMBP public forum.
Ride safe,

One thing I want to try and strive for is a way to get people involved while working around busy schedules. I know first hand that joining the patrol means some amount of work on the individual's part.... often times it is difficult to make it to the appropriate training classes, so hopefully we'll find ways to make these things available and have plenty of events to help people get through the probation.
I rode a lot with James last year - he was an excellent mentor and helped me get into the patrol. (thanks James!!!) It was a BLAST riding the Buck Hill events... riding places like Welch is cool too.
I think being in the patrol has made me appreciate the sport at just that much greater level. I think it will get even better this year and hope that many of you can find a way to participate.
I'm pleased so many have spoken up!
