I am looking to get a decent road bike put together as cheap as I can do it. I am wondering if anyone has an older road bike, not too old, that they want to sell. The frame size does not really matter, I will probably buy a frame from One on One and put the parts on it. I am trying to stay under $600.00 for the whole thing. I can get a frame and fork for around $300.00.
I figured I would check here, knowing some people have a lot of parts/bikes laying around.

I was thinking about doing a similar thing, but for now I think I'm going to just get a 2nd set of wheels for my mountain bike and put some skinnies on them. Then just swap out the wheels depending on if I'm riding road or mountain. I dunno, but maybe down the road I'll go for something more dedicated to the pavement, especially when I'm not clueless about all the road options:)
You might want to check the shops too, slow time of year might be good opportunity to pick something up cheap. This is approx time of year I bought my bike and I got a hell of a deal.

Check with your LBS there are quite a few decent road bikes for around 6 bills, County Cycles in Roseville is a good road bike shop with some used inventory. I'm not sure on the date but in the past the U has had a bike swap in the spring that im sure you could pickup somthing pretty cheap.

Bicycling Magazine's December issue reviewed some decently priced road bikes for about $600. The Specialized rated high and was $660. I recommend going with steel but this is more a personal opinion/experience.
When you get it together and want to do some (bike) bar to bar riding then do a ride with TCBC. I ride with them in the spring to get into shape and it is really fun and tiring. The diversity in riding skill and age is really broad so don't worry about being left in the dust. This club has 1,000+ members and their are many rides each day all over the Metro Area. If you want to join me sometime then let me know. I usually do the stone arch biridge ride. Twin City Bicycling Club (http://www.mtn.org/tcbc/schd.official.current.html)

If you enjor riding youll stick with at least a 9sp shimano 105 level parts group! Anything less and if breaks down pretty damn quick! Check ebay for stuff....105 stuff is usualy around 1k or so, but you can find em cheap ebay style. Also shops might have last years stuff in your size right now possibly, and youll get a great deal on them. If you need help gimmie a yell and Ill tag along with ya :)

Compare new bikes in general at Bicycling Magazine Website (http://205.147.231.123/ss.asp?Fam=RBRacingPer)
Looks like there are 10 roadbikes at $600 or less referencing this site. Also, Check out Freewheel who may have a Lemond Nevada City at decent price and if not make an offer. They are easy to deal with. This is a steel bike with good compenents. I have Zurich and if you have ever ridden is a mountain bike then it is comparable to a higher end sports car.

I agree on the 105 recommendation, I tried a couple of bikes with lower end groups and wasn't happy with the performance. Might be hard to get 105 at your price point though. I have a steel Lemond with all 105 (it was $1300), it's a great bike.

Thanks for the input. I will keep looking into this to find my best option. I like the frame at One on One, I forgot the name, so I was mainly looking for parts or a used road bike I can swap parts from. This way, I can get a little higher end without spending a lot of money.

If you find a bike with 105 componentry at your price range, even with piecing it together, I will have to shake your hand. But I bet you could bust a good deal on 03's from someplace, heck I should have seen what Rydjor's was selling when I was there yesterday but I was too distracted by the mountain bikes.
I got my road bike there this August (Raliegh Grand Sport). It's as cheap of components as you can get on a road bike but for what I'm using it for (training rides, casual rides, etc.) it'll work just fine for me. He didn't have any of these in my size, so I got one ordered. And when I do wear down what is on there, who says I can't upgrade? It was $475ish and after trading in a Mesa it was around $285ish (can't recall unless i have the reciept in my face). But it was a great deal for me as any bike I get while is bargain shopping since I'm a college student. ($1100 Sugar 4 for $600 and then my road bike).

Well, I found a road bike at roadbikereview.com. It's a 2000 GT ZR1000 with some 105 and Dura Ace stuff on it. I paid $520.00 for it. Now I am stoked to get it in the mail.....hopefully soon, so I can put it on my rollers and start training early this year!
Way cool and I have you guys to thank for the suggestions.

Congrats on the new bike, shoot, with that componentry, it was worth it just for the pieces!
I am going to use my road bike quite a bit more than I did last year! (with the new baby, not as much time to make the trek down to Lebanon and there isn't much in the way of mtn. biking out where I am at...)

That's great! Another convert.
I was driving around west of town the other day on some of the roads that I ride on, I was seriously jonesing for the road bike.
Do any of you guys ride your road bike in the winter at all? I have an irrational fear of black ice with the skinny tires, I only ride it when the temp is 40+.

The roads have been so dry with the lack of snow. It has made for EXCELLENT road riding this winter. Got out for a good 40-45 mile ride on Saturday afternoon now that I figured out how to keep my feet warm.:D

I plan to find some cold weather gear. The hardest thing to keep warm are your feet, but those little neoprene booties work very well. I used to ride all winter, even when I had a car. I did it because it was fun and kept me in shape. Now, I want to get back into riding in the winter, but it's essential to have the right cold weather gear.

Myself and a couple of other guys I ride/train with bought Cyclo Cross bikes as our "Winter Beaters". I bought a brand new LeMond Poprad for $849. It's Shimano Sora Componentry is weak, but it has held up through two winters of riding on sand/salt and has not had one problem. I wash it after every ride, and I also coated the inside of the steel frame to prevent any rust/corrosion. You can ride it on the trails, or off, which is awesome. I have a pair of Bontrager Jones tires, which came stock, and have gone through two pairs of them, but they work just fine. You get a bit more contact, and I can think of only one occasion where I went down hard, but there was a new layer of snow covering a patch of ice on a corner, which would take out any bike without studed tires. Don't overlook that possibility when thinking of a winter road bike. You can also put on some decent road tires in the spring when it's still wet, and there is still some salt on the shoulders and protect your road bike to the fullest. The other guys I ride with went with the Trek XO1, you can find some great deals right now on last years models that are still on the sales floor at a few local bike shops. Another benefit, you look way cooler racing the fall 'Cross series on a 'Cross bike than on a Mountain Bike!

I guess that is one of the reason's I want to put together a beater fixie. I'm thinking of converting my '92 GT Karakorum (MTB) to fixie with a White Eno Hub and putting road gearing on it. It would be cheaper that building up a road frame.

It's here and it's cool!
It came with 2 stems, long and low and short and high, and a computer with cadence. It's got mostly 105 stuff with Dura Ace cranks. The tires are hardly used. It's in very nice shape!
All for $500.00. I got it through the classifieds and www.roadbikereview.com if anyone wants to know.
Now if it would just get nice out so I can ride it! Like that's going to happen!
