Yes it is winter now!
Raft removal this Saturday at 1:30PM (the time you should arrive at the raft). This won't take long, but we can use a lot of bodies. There will be an ATV to help pull, but we could use a couple of axes and maybe a chainsaw to deal with the ice. Also, someone with waders would be great.
Please let me know (RSVP) if you can attend and if you plan to bring any of the above things so we don't end up with too many, or not enough!
Suggested access is either ride or walk in from from the Lyndale boatramp lot (east side), or ride/walk in from the access at Overlook Drive and Goodrich Road (one block west of France) - west side.
Contact me with any questions.
Thanks,
Steve Eberly

The good news is you wont need any mosquito repellent. Please try to make it if you can!! The Raft sure is not as nice as a bridge but it does the job. It could be severly damaged by freezing ice squishing it into little pieces. Come on down.

If I have recovered from a Homebrew club potluck tonight, I'll try and make it down there.

I can bring pick and Blade mattocks and Pulaski's as well...
The should work real well on getting through any ice.
I Plan on making it.
WHen are we meeting in the parking lot so I can load tools onto the atv?

I just got back from scouting out the situation and thanks to my awesome new Light and Motion ARC Lithium Ion Lamp I was able to see that the raft is frozen in but good - no problem walking across the creek - I'd say there is 3-5 inches of ice there.
My thoughts are if we can cleanly cut the raft loose - maybe we can pop it up onto the good ice and slide it up creek to where the bank is not so steep - but then I've never done this before and will need to rely on the veterans experience.
We can for sure use more help!

bring along a chainsaw w/ a sharp chain you really don't care about. it's the easiest way to free this from the ice.
i once used a ditch witch to cut an ore boat out of the ice in the duluth harbor....

Thanks to what I counted as 15 super volunteers the raft is out of the icey clutches of Nine Mile Creek and tucked away for the winter. Pictures later. Kudos to Don for the chainsaw work and John for the ATV. Others I managed to remember the names of were Ken, Randy, Roger, Matt, Dennis, James, & Paul.
FYI no problem getting across the creek as the ice is plenty thick - just not right below the east stairs right now.
A few folks seem to have tried to bike but the snow right now seems to be too inconsistent for a great experience - of course that can change in a minute with weather conditions.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
